USPCA Region 12 Patrol Case of the 2nd Quarter 2009

Officer Dan Kruchowski and K-9 Pax of the Park Rapids Police Department

On 05-31-09 at 2351 hours Officer Kruchowski and K-9 Pax were requested to assist on a report of a male armed with a shotgun outside of a residence.  The male suspect had fired several rounds from the gun and was trying to get into the residence.  Upon arrival he learned the suspect had fled on foot.

Officer Kruchowski got his K-9 partner, Pax and started a track from where the suspect was last seen.  Pax located a track, which lead to an area near some parked cars.  Pax began air scenting near the vehicles.  The suspect was located hiding inside a Chevrolet Blazer in the driver’s seat.  The suspect was given several commands to get out of the vehicle and show his hands.  Officers opened up the car door and the suspect refused to comply.  Pax was sent into the vehicle and apprehended the suspect in the neck.  Pax pulled the suspect from the vehicle at which time Pax was removed from the Apprehension.  The suspect was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained during the bite and was arrested.  He is also being charged as a Felon in possession of a firearm.

Trooper Doug Rauenhorst and K-9 Demi of the Minnesota State Patrol

On 06-19-09 at 0032 hours Trooper Rauenhost stopped a van for suspended object on I-35 at MM# 13.  The Texas registered van was occupied by 2 adult males.  Neither was the owner of the van.  Both occupants were looking down and away Rauenhorst and would not make eye contact with him.  He also observed several other narcotic indicators.  There was only one small bag of clothing for the two occupants.  The van had a much lived in look with a lot of fast food wrappers and energy drinks of the floor.  Rauenhorst ran an EPIC check on the vehicle and driver.  The driver had several Mexico border crossings this year.  EPIC check revealed that the van just came out of Mexico at the Eagle Pass Port of entry 49 hours ago.  Rauenhorst issued a warning to the driver and concluded the traffic stop.  He then asked consent to run his K-9 Demi around the vehicle.  The driver gave consent.  Demi alerted by sniffing intensely at the driver’s door and went low on the door.  He kept Demi on lead and detailed the rear of the van.  Demi went away from his lead and began to sniff intensely at the bottom of the van hatch back door alerting to the odor of narcotics.  She then began to scratch indicating to the odor of drugs.  Demi was rewarded and placed back in the squad car.  Rauenhorst searched the van and located that both front doors, the rear hatchback door, rear quarter panels and the rear roof of the van contained bricks of Marijuana.  The bricks of Marijuana were wrapped in tape, then grease and then the outer layer was cellophane.  The total weight of the Marijuana was 110 pounds.  Both the driver and passenger were booked into jail for 2nd Degree Controlled Substance.  The vehicle and some cash were also seized.
