Region 12 Patrol Case of the Quarter

2nd Quarter 2010

Officer Brian Thureson & K9 Haus

Minneapolis Police Department

On June 7, 2010 I, Officer Thureson, was working squad 958 along with my K9 partner Haus.  I heard on the radio that squad 331 was involved in a motor vehicle pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

I heard the pursuit going northbound on Hiawatha Ave., approaching 42nd St. East, where I was waiting at the intersection.  The vehicle turned eastbound on 42nd St., and I entered the pursuit.  The vehicle was traveling in an excess of 70 mile per hour, turned off its headlights and ran red light at Minnehaha Ave. South.  I observed the vehicle turn northbound on 45th Ave. South.  I attempted to negotiate the turn, but hit a parked unoccupied vehicle and ended up with a flat tire.  This ended my involvement in the pursuit.

A short time later, the vehicle was located unoccupied behind 3525 44th Ave. South.  Officers on scene were able to detain the front seat passenger and identify the driver as Rekow.  I am familiar with Rekow as a burglar, auto thief and being in numerous stolen vehicle pursuits.  In Rekow’s most recent fleeing in a motor vehicle, he fought with officers.  I also knew that Rekow had a felony warrant out for his arrest for fleeing in a motor vehicle.

Officer McCarthy aired Rekow was wearing plaid shorts, a green shirt and was possibly last seen running southbound from the vehicle on foot.  I got a ride with K9 Haus to the scene.  I placed a tracking harness on K9 Haus with a fifteen foot leash and attempted a track.

I attempted a track on the south side where the passenger in the vehicle told us Rekow had run.  K9 Haus did not pick up a track.  I then tried the north side and observed K9 Haus turn sharply picking up a track one house north of 3525 44th Ave. S.  and started to head westbound one house, crossed the street and then southbound one house and pulled into the alley.    K9 Haus then tracked southbound in the alley one yard and again cut westbound on house north of 3525 43rd Ave S.   K9 Haus pulled me into the front yard and out southbound, pulling hard into a porch at 3525 43rd Ave. S.

I then heard a person yell in the porch.  I ran into the porch and observed K9 Haus had apprehended a white male wearing plaid shorts and a green t-shirt in the lower leg.  I seen the suspects face and recognized him as Rekow.  I told Rekow he was under arrest and to show me his hands.  I observed Rekow violently kicking K9 Haus.  I told Rekow to stop fighting the dog and to roll over on his stomach and place his hands behind his back.  Rekow then started to punch K9 Haus in the head.  I noticed a claw hammer next to Rekow, which I feared he would use on K9 Haus.  I was able to grab K9 Haus while back up officers grabbed Rekows hands and arrested him.  I then removed Haus off of Rekow

Other officers arrived to assist.  An ambulance was ordered.  Rekow appeared incoherent and under the influence of cocaine.  He was transported to HCMC for medical attention.

Region 12 Detector Case of the Quarter

2nd Quarter 2010

Deputy Donnie Schoenrock & K9 Bear

Jackson Coutny Sheriff’s Office

On May 3, 2010 at approximately 1615 hours, I, Deputy Schoenrock, received a phone call from the Jackson Police Department, requesting the assistance of my K9 Bear.  Officers received a tip that there was an apartment in the Rolling Hills Apartment Complex that had numerous other residents reporting they could smell the odor of marijuana coming from it.  I was asked to do a sniff of the hallway to see which apartment it may be.

When I arrived, I was advised that apartment 108 had the odor coming from it.  I deployed K9 Bear.  We started sniffing several doors prior to apartment 108.  After sniffing the door of apartment 108, K9 bear gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics.  I informed other officers that we should do a knock and talk.

We knocked and it took the resident inside a long time to answer the door.  We asked if we could come in and we were told yes.  I advised the resident that my K9 had alerted to the odor of narcotics at the door of his apartment.  We also informed the resident that many neighbors called in complaining of the odor coming from this apartment.  The resident’s eyes were bloodshot and glossy.  Consistent with someone that would be under the influence of marijuana.  Based on all the factors, I asked the resident if we could look around and search.  The resident stated no, go ahead.

I deployed K9 bear in the apartment to search.  K9 Bear alerted to the toilet.  In the toilet, we observed marijuana that appeared the resident tried to flush.  K9 Bear also alerted to the odor of drugs at the only bedroom door in the apartment, which was locked.  We opened the door and searched.  I observed a serving tray with a small amount of marijuana and a scale.  I searched under the pillow on the bed and located 1/12 to 2 ounces of marijuana.   Further search of the apartment, led us to, approximately one pound brick of marijuana in a duffle bag, inside an Igloo drinking container.  The resident was then arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance.
